What electronic resources are available to me?

The Library subscribes to over 35 online databases to help you with your research. They cover all subjects taught at the University. The databases provide full-text books, journal articles, theses, reports, newspapers. etc. Each database provide Help guides for better searching. These databases are accessible from anywhere at anytime. No extra username/password needed after you login from LMS.

Is there more than one catalogue?

There are several types of materials in the Library; printed, electronic and audio-video (cd-roms, kit, tapes).

To search for printed and audio-video materials, you need to use the OPAC. To learn how to use OPAC, click the Library Guides link (under i-Tools) and go through the PowerPoint slides. Printed materials are only readable and usable offline. Which means, you need to come to the Library and use them. You may borrow the printed materials (books). Audio-video materials are only to be used in the Library.

To search for electronic materials, you may use the online databases. These databases contain books, journals, theses, reports, etc. You may access these databases through the Library portal from home or anywhere else, at anytime. You can also download, print or save the materials.

Why can’t I get access to the databases?

Accessing databases should be freely available whether you are at home, the office or OUM campus. In accessing a subscribed databases, there will always be security involved to prevent hacking or misuse. To secure our own databases, there is a little change in the access link that you will notice on the Library portal.

When you click on each database, you will see red-colored links – ON CAMPUS ACCESS and OFF CAMPUS ACCESS. These are links to control the access by identifying your IP (Internet protocol) address of your PC.

If you are accessing the portal from anywhere within the OUM Main Campus in Kuala Lumpur, you may click ON CAMPUS ACCESS to use the databases.

If you are accessing from anywhere else other than the KL Main Campus, you must click OFF CAMPUS ACCESS. Failure to follow this instruction may result in access denial.

I am a new student and I can’t get access to the Library portal.

All registered students/staff/tutor of OUM are automatically legible to use the Library portal. Once you are able to access your LMS/staff portal through the OUM portal (http://www.oum.edu.my), you can then, access the Library portal by clicking to the Library icon on the menu bar.

However, there is a tiny ‘mishap’ if you try to access the Library portal right after your registration. You will see an ‘error’ message on the screen. This happens because your registration data is not immediately and completely transferred to the Library’s server on the same day. It takes a while to have your details load up. Due to this, the system is unable to identify you as a full-pledge user since the data available in the Library system is only partially filled. Thus, the ‘error’ message will appear.

However, not to worry because the error will not hinder you from searching the digital collection. You may fill up the form for us to complete your details manually or you can just ignore the errors and start searching for books.
