Summary

This American Society for Training & Development handbook is a comprehensive introduction to every imaginable aspect of e-learning from America’s premier professional organization for those involved in workplace learning and performance. The more than fifty articles by a variety of e-learning practitioners give a breadth and scope beyond what is found in most volumes and provide an introduction to well respected writers and trainers including Handbook editor Allison Rossett; Masie Center president Elliott Masie; Marc Rosenberg, author of E-Learning: Strategies for Delivering Knowledge in the Digital Age; and ASTD executive editor Patricia Galagan. Among the highlights in a book filled with well written articles are Rosenberg’s “The Four C’s of Success: Culture, Champions, Communication, and Change” (an entire chapter from his book); Masie’s “Blended Learning: The Magic Is in the Mix” (which argues against making e-learning the only mode available to learners); Brandon Hall’s “Six Steps to Developing a Successful E-Learning Initiative: Excerpts from the E-Learning Guidebook”; and Nory Jones and James Laffey’s “How to Facilitate E-Collaboration and E-Learning in Organizations.”

Summary

The main objective of this study was to identify successful factors in implementing an e-learning
program. Existing literature has identified several successful factors in implementing an e-learning
program. These factors include program content, web page accessibility, learners’ participation and
involvement, web site security and support, institution commitment, interactive learning
environment, instructor competency, and presentation and design. All these factors were tested
together with other related criteria which are important for e-learning program implementation. The
samples were collected based on quantitative methods, specifically, self-administrated
questionnaires. All the criteria that were tested to see if they were important in an e-learning
program implementation. (authors' abstract)

Summary

E-learning as an effective educational tool has been integrated into many offered courses provided by higher education
institutions. Throughout eliminating the barriers of time and distance, students' lifelong learning can be achieved. Due
to a broad global attention given to e-Learning, various studies had been conducted by academe, different organizations
as well as the government of various nations (Rosenberg, 2001). Saudi Arabian universities are among those universal
universities that implement E-learning system. However, recent research indicated that majority of students in Saudi's
universities are still unwilling to use online system. Therefore, many factors need to be determined in order to enhance
the students' intention to use E-learning tools and participate effectively in their courses using the accessible electronic
channels. The current study has extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to investigate the role of Enjoyment,
computer anxiety, computer self-efficacy and Internet experience in influencing the students' intention to use E-learning
in Saudi's universities. 402 governmental universities' students were participated to test the proposed hypotheses and to
determine weather the proposed variables have an effect on the students' intention to use E-learning system. The results
of stepwise regression indicated that computer anxiety, computer self-efficacy and Enjoyment were significantly
influence the students' intention to use E-learning while the Internet experience was insignificantly influence them.
Furthermore, the importance of Attitude in mediating the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of
use and the students' behavioral intention was confirmed. (Authors' abstract)

Summary

This paper is a study on the interaction patterns of distance learners enrolled in the Mathematics and Physics programmes of Universiti Sains Malaysia in the videoconferencing learning environment (VCLE). Interaction patterns are analysed in six randomly chosen videoconferencing sessions within one academic year. The findings show there are more interactions in the graphics display mode than the video display mode. The graphics display mode, which involves the simultaneous interaction of the teacher, students and course materials, shows greater student engagement in the VCLE. The focus on a three-component interaction in distance learning differs from previous studies which looked at distinct types of two-component interactions. The types of communicative interaction, in particular the explanatory and cognitive types which are dominant in the graphics display mode, are discussed within the construct of learning. The higher number of teacher-initiated interactions may also imply that the teacher plays a crucial role in creating and maintaining a community of inquiry focused on exploring and developing content as well as giving feedback on concepts, ideas or solutions. Summary

Literature Online via E-learning (L.O.V.E.) is a web portal with the objective to provide Foundation students of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (U.T.P.) with an adequate and informative literature learning material in an interactive approach. Before this, the learning process of English literature is only being done inside the classroom with large number of students being placed at one time. The teaching method has not only making the students feel uncomfortable with the learning environment, but also discouraged them from learning the literature effectively. Adding to the problem is the lack of references and reading materials. For that, the web portal aims to provide them with an interactive way of learning English literature by incorporating multimedia features together with the syllabus. For this project; modified waterfall model has been used as a methodology of the L.O.V.E. portal; with 5 steps of requirement analysis, design, implementation, testing and maintenance. The major areas of focus in the methodology are the analysis and product development (implementation); since the result of the final product will be reflected from what had been worked on these two phases. A survey had been done in the UTP campus to identify problems of the original method, and find better solutions to students in the future. The completed portal will contain lecture materials, student’s forum, lecturer’s teaching video, clips of drama scenes, and quizzes. It would stimulate an improvement in learning literature that had been considered as the ‘boring’ subject if there is an online, multimedia application created for the benefit of learning English literature. L.O.V.E portal would benefit the students in term of the way they learn and interact with each other on the literature subject, apart from learning the theoretical aspects in the classroom. It would allow them to express their thoughts and feelings in a different way, thus maximizing potential and possibilities of excelling in literature in English. 9Abstract by authors)

Summary

With the advent of the Internet, more and more public universities in Malaysia are putting in effort to introduce e-learning in their respective universities. This entails a significant amount of investments and if the users do not use them the investment would not five benefit and would be deemed as a failure. Many previous researches have looked at continued usage as a measure of success in information system implementation. This research also follows in the same direction. Using a structured questionnaire derived from the literature, data was collected from 1616 undergraduate and post graduate students from public universities in Malaysia. The questionnaire consisted of 3 sections. The first section collected the demographic data, the second section elicited information about information quality, service quality and system quality, section three measured the continuance intention. Data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that service quality (ÎČ = 0.382, p < 0.01), information quality (ÎČ = 0.338, p < 0.01) and system quality (ÎČ = 0.175, p < 0.01) were positively related to intention to continue usage explaining a total of 59.1% variance. A closer examination reveals that in terms of predictive power service quality had the biggest influence followed by information quality and then system quality. Implications from these findings to e-learning system developers and implementers are further elaborated. (Abstract by authors)
